So, what do we think of the new Maximum Impact game? Personally, i wasn't keen on MI1 (what with the hokey dubbing, cranked end boss, and general ill-feeling towards a 2d game in 3d), but this one looks better. I've watched a few videos of it in action, and there are some interesting features; seems that a major new addition is the parry system - which doesn't look as refined as it does in 3s - but still a genuine innovation nonetheless. Also there's the large, well-dressed(!) character roster, with several welcome additions (Kim, Bonne, etc.), to fight with.
... However, it's not all sunshine and farts. There are some new character additions that, if i was being a smug patronising count - would describe as 'curious'. As i'm not, i'll describe them as 'f**king whack'. I'm not so bothered about the filler characters like Seth and Clark (although there are better KOF fighters that could have appeared here), but what's really going against my grain is the amount of 'magical girl' characters that have been included. There's now no less than four; Luise Meyrink, Ninon Beart, Mignon Beart (who is still teeth-grindingly cute with that cat outfit and little slide-whistle noise when she runs), and Athena Asamiya. I can understand the staff working on MI2 wanting Athena in there so that fanboys don't block up the e-mail network at SNK Playmore - but this is KOF, not Harry Potter.
However, i expect i'll look out for a copy when it hits UK shores - it's not the calibre of game i'd dash out and pay through the nose for on import, but it looks like fun. More so than Mortal Kombat: Deception, at least, and i was prepared to spend money on that.
